So far, I have focused on the role of Yoga in our life.  Now is the time to look at the importance of Kundalini yoga and how it affects our system.

Kundalini Yoga has its primary effect on three main systems of the body.

The nervous system,

The brain,

The Glandular system.

Kundalini Yoga Strengthens the Nervous System

Through altering breathing patterns, exercising unfamiliar muscle groups, and restructuring thought patterns, these exercises first stimulate the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), facilitating a greater degree of nervous energy within the body. A stronger SNS response improves health by allowing the body to respond to stress with greater electrical (nervous) energy. It also tones the nervous system by activating nerve pathways.

The exercises produce a strong response from the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) that allows the body to relax deeply. A strong PNS improves health by reducing the number of nerve pathways being used for a period of time. Thus essential body systems such as digestion, assimilation, elimination, and lymphatic circulation can receive a greater portion of electrical energy to perform their functions completely.

It is understood that the right side of the brain affects relaxation (PNS) and the left side affects activity (SNS). Thus the overall effect of Kundalini Yoga is to awaken the brain to a coordinated activity that balances the total nervous system. This eliminates stress, due to over-activation of the sympathetic nervous system and degeneration, due to the over-activation of the parasympathetic nervous system.

Kundalini Yoga Exercises Oxygenate the Blood, which Increases Brain Cell Metabolism

When blood oxygen levels are higher, brain activity increases. For this reason, great emphasis is put upon the breath in Kundalini Yoga. As a result, the blood becomes super-oxygenated. This process facilitates increased brain activity which benefits the nervous system and glandular system.

Kundalini Yoga Benefits the Glandular System

Kundalini Yoga exercises balance hypothalamic, pineal, and pituitary secretions which in turn balance the activity of the entire glandular system. This balancing of hormones allows regulatory processes to occur which restores health and stimulates changes in brain chemistry, resulting in increasing amounts of certain neurotransmitters produced by the brain. One of the great benefits of this change in neurochemistry is that it is accompanied by a sensation of well-being.
